You have booked your outdoor family portrait session and now you are wondering about how to look your best in your photos. Your make-up application can make a huge difference in the way you look on camera.
While you certainly could hire a Make-up artist, and I do recommend doing so, you don't have to in order to get a flawless and natural make-up look. With practice and a few professional tips you can feel confident in the way you look.
Here are 3 Top Tips to applying your makeup for your portrait session:
1. Apply your makeup in natural light. Open your curtains and set up a mirror in front of a window or even head outside to a shady porch. This lighting will show you if your foundation is the correct shade. While applying your makeup, turn your face in all sorts of angles to you can see how the light is reflecting. Smooth out any unblended foundation lines that you see.
2. Your foundation needs a primer. You really don't want your makep uneven, wearing off, or settling into your pores and lines. A primer is the secret! If you have dry skin, use a moisturizing primer. If you have oily skin, use a mattifying primer. Pop into your local Sephora or Ulta and let one of their experts help you select one that is best for your skin. While you are there, get your foundation color matched too!
3. This tip is probably the most important! Do not use shimmery shadows, blushes, or highlighters. Light refect stoo much off of shimmery makeup causing harsh highlights. Cream blush and matte shadows are best.
EXTRA TIPS:
Do not over-apply concealer or foundation in an effort to cover blemishes or discoloration. Heavy, caked on makeup is more difficult to edit/smooth in post processing. I can more easily remove blemishes, wrinkles, and dark circles when they are not layered with makeup. Less is more!
Focus on shaping and defining your brows, eyes, and lips. Again, with matte shades that will absorb rather than reflect light. You want your cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin to do the reflecting naturally with diffused light.
Set your makeup look with a light layer of non-reflective finshing powder and VOILA!
You are ready to put your best face forward for your natural-light, outdoor portriats with confidence.
